The challenge was to develop a strategic approach to sustainably support a range of multi-use tenancies into the Queen Victoria Market. Adopting sustainable principles of design, these tenancies should offer opportunity for varied, short term and tactical inhabitation by a range of different stakeholders and tenants – sustaining communities through affordance.

Where does iki come in?

After an observation of different parts of the market, we identified spaces that were unable to support the level of traffic they had as well as identify underutilized places where workers could rest or visitors could eat and shop.

Our keywords were 'mobility', 'convertibility', and 'combinability'. After identifying the key functions of the intervention and what materials from the market we could repurpose to construct it, we came up with a mobile cart as illustrated below.

What is it?

  • Portable, modular frame made of scaffolding.

  • Recycled wood, cardboard and polystyrene- largest waste groups at QVM.

  • Canvas/ tarpaulin roof fabric.

  • Countertop material: recycled plastic.

What does it do?

  • Cooking demonstrations

  • Cultural food showcases

  • Preparation and sale of food

  • Space to rest/ eat
